A Fiction Update and Beta Readers
This week I’ve been busy writing a second draft for a short story called Jolson. On top of this Substack I write weekly, I’ve been working on a short story collection. My goal with this collection is to eventually pursue an agent or self-publish. Before I put the cart in front of the horse the first step is to polish enough stories to compile into a book format.
When writing fiction you’re selling an idea. Building a world in the reader’s mind that if done poorly dies before it even starts. I don’t have many friends who read and as a result, I rely on my instinct for what I consider quality work. I’ve spent longer than I’d like to admit refining my work into a first, second, third, and fourth draft fixing less and less each time but doubting myself along the way.
Due to my lack of experience in publishing It’s difficult to gauge what’s worth a reader’s time and what’s self-aggrandizement. I try to be mindful of my ego while working but to deny I take pride in my work would be foolish.
If you’re an avid fiction reader and would be interested in reading some of my early work I’d love trusted beta readers for feedback.
